A Lolita’s Adventures in Japantown

My dearest Diary, I am so, so sorry for my negligence these past two weeks! I have been most dreadfully busy, and when I haven’t been busy, I have been ill. As such, the events specified in this entry actually occurred over a week ago; I do hope you’ll forgive my tardiness.

Last week was my college’s spring break, and I celebrated with a short vacation to San Francisco with my significant other. While there, I went to many places (and perhaps more importantly, ate many things)–but I will only provide the details of one small part of the trip here, as I feel they are most relevant to the theme of my blog. That is, I was lucky enough to visit San Francisco’s BABY, The Stars Shine Bright location, which is as of the time of writing this, the only BABY location in the US.

It was not my first time going to a physical BABY store; I have also been to the La Foret and Kyoto locations. But that did not make the occasion any less exciting, and furthermore, it was a joy to visit a location with the familiarity of my home country and language. The store is located on the top floor in a small, Japanese-style mall in Japantown. Like its Japanese counterparts, there is a strict no-photography policy in the store, so unfortunately I do not have any pictures to post here, although you may look at many photos on their official Facebook page.

It may sound silly, but it really does feel magical to be in a physical lolita store, not to mention that of your favorite brand.  I spent far too long just admiring the details of each dress. The stock photos on their website really never do the pieces justice!! There are so many dresses which I thought looked ugly or busy from photos on the internet, but were surprisingly beautiful in person. One dress I absolutely loved was AaTP’s Silver Spoon of Blessing JSK. I thought the stock photos made the print look somewhat muddy and washed out, but in person, it is such a lovely and elegant dress….unfortunately, I am currently restricting myself from buying more main pieces until I build up my basics (namely, shoes, legwear and bags). But I did make one purchase, this Usakumya cross-body bag! He is so fluffy, and surprisingly roomy as well. I love him very much

After this purchase came my reservation for two at the Crown & Crumpet, a small tea parlor located right underneath BABY. I really applaud whoever planned that out, because it could not be more perfect. From what I hear, it is not uncommon at all to see lolitas stop here for some tea and cake after a trip to BABY.  The decor of C&C is so very appropriate for BABY’s aesthetic—look at my pictures below for reference. We enjoyed two pots of tea, their special house blend, as well as “Paris”, a black blend with vanilla and caramel, along with two plates of sweets.

Below is my coordinate for the occasion. Appropriately, everything is from BABY, except my shoes, which are from Metamorphose. The dress is BABY’s Rosellina Fleur JSK, a recent purchase which I am utterly in love with! And the Usakumya bag is the one I purchased just an hour before this photo was taken, hehe.

For lovers of sweet lolita fashion, if you are in the San Francisco area, you absolutely must check it out  There is also an Angelic Pretty store there, although in a different area of the city. I did not have time to visit there, but to be completely frank, I heavily prefer BABY over AP, so I wasn’t too upset about this. (Sorry, AP fans!) As an East Coast lolita, it is hard to say when, if ever, I’ll be back…here’s hoping they try opening another location on the east coast (rest in peace, NYC BABY…). Where do you all think the next BABY location should be? I personally think one might do well in Philadelphia~

A Cozy, Rainy Winter Meet-up

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of attending a lolita meet-up at Grounds for Sculpture. It is such a strange and wonderful place! There are (unsettlingly lifelike) sculptures placed throughout the grounds. Many of them are inspired by Monet paintings and are dressed in Victorian garb, which was quite appropriate for the occasion.  The weather was as gloomy as ever, but it added to the eerie atmosphere. At one point I heard some very loud, distressed noises; it turns out there was a muster of peacocks nearby. Oddly enough, many peacocks live at the park. What’s more, one of them is completely snow-white. It was so strange-looking and yet so beautiful. Its feathers reminded me of dandelion puffs.

In addition to strolling through the grounds, we also took lunch at Rat’s Restaurant, an adorable French restaurant in the park. I cannot express how cute this restaurant is. A few girls commented that it felt something like a hobbit-hole, and I would agree with that comparison. The ceilings were quite low, all the furnishings were rich and wooden, and there was even a fireplace burning near our table, with a little nook filled with blankets and pillows for cozy fireside reading. The food was excellent as well. I had a croque-madame, followed up with a spiced creme brûlée and blue-flower Earl Grey tea for dessert.

The cherry on top of a wonderful afternoon was that one of the co-hosts of the meet, Lucy, very generously gifted us some goodies to celebrate the launch of her brand Cottonbook. Her designs are a mix of casual lolita and mori-kei styles, and they look so comfy and cute! We each received an envelope (which the hosts went through the trouble of sealing with wax and flowers— so cute!) containing some beautiful printed postcards. We also got face masks and loose-leaf tea.  It was such a nice getaway from the cold weather and homework I’ve had to deal with recently. I hope I will be able to enjoy more frilly outings like this in my last semester of college~

Hints of Spring

There was a ladybug on my window-sill yesterday. I was so excited, I haven’t seen one in such a long time. It must have been the weather; it’s been unusually warm the past couple of days. Unfortunately, after two days of blessing us all with her bright and buttery face, the sun has gone back into hiding. The ladybug I saw has vanished as well. But I will not yet give up my hopes for spring—look at what I saw on campus today! These sweet crocuses were sticking straight up out of the earth like stretching fairies.

Speaking of flowers, my Valentine’s flowers have begun to shrivel up. I am going to preserve them by pressing them in some books. Soon enough there will be more flowers on the ground. I am looking forward to walking through them with my parasol.

Why Do Lolitas Drink Tea?

Even if you wear lolita fashion but dislike tea, you can’t deny the prevalence of tea in the lolita subculture. Tea appears again and again both in the clothes themselves (here are some examples), and in the lifestyle, with lolita communities often arranging meet-ups at tea parlors. Some lolita brands have even released their own tea sets in the past.

Why do lolitas like tea so much? The main reason for this is because lolita fashion is heavily inspired by Victorian culture. A small history lesson on tea: The tea plant (Camellia sinensis) and the drink made from it originate from East Asia. The Chinese in particular have a deep history and culture surrounding tea, drinking it for both medicinal purposes and for enjoyment. Tea was even used as currency at one point! People (at least in America) most often associate tea with England, but the first European country to be introduced to tea was actually Portugal. From there it continued to spread all over the continent.  When tea was first introduced to England in the 17th century it was foreign and expensive and thus was a luxury reserved for the upper class. In fact, it was a Victorian lady of nobility, Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, who is credited with the invention of the “afternoon tea” we all know and love. Hence, the association of tea with Victorian England, and likewise with lolita.

My other personal theory on why tea is popular with lolitas is the idea of “ritual”. This post I found once on /cgl/ explains this perfectly (click the image to enlarge):

Taking things slowly and enjoying all the details is one of the things I associate the most with lolita. All the details in the fabric and lace make you more likely to stop and relish in all the intricacies, moreso than other clothing styles. In my normal day-to-day life I am often clumsy and rush about quite a bit, but whenever I wear lolita I automatically move more slowly and carefully, because I am aware of how delicate and expensive my clothing is.

How is this related to tea? Because tea is such a delicate plant with thousands of complex chemical compounds, all the details like water temperature, brewing time, the container it’s brewed in, even the season the leaves are picked in can all have enormous effects on the taste of the drink produced. To brew a proper cup of tea requires a lot of attention to these details. To fully enjoy and appreciate the tea also requires a good deal of mindfulness: tea is a delicate beverage, unlike coffee, and you need to drink it slowly to really capture all the subtleties in flavor.

Looking at tea’s historical association with the noble class, as well as the delicacy of the beverage itself, it is quite easy to agree that it is the perfect beverage for an elegant, classy fashion like lolita.

Bonus: If you are interested in learning more about tea, I highly recommend the Mei Leaf Youtube channel. I’d start with watching “5 Ways Tea Makes you Happier” and “5 Common Brewing Mistakes”. Enjoy!

♥︎ Valentine’s Day Coord 2018 ♥︎

I have always been fond of Valentine’s Day–I think it’s all the pink-and-red color combinations that get me. (And all the sweets, of course!) My Valentine is unfortunately abroad right now, but he did surprise me by sending this absolutely beautiful flower arrangement. It smells like freshness and spring and rose petals and just absolute loveliness. I put them on my desk and kept the window cracked open as I enjoyed a pot of Chinese black tea with some butter cookies…the breeze came through ever so slightly and spread the scent of flowers all throughout my room.

I want to share some photos of today’s outfit. I finally got a proper DSLR over winter break, though I’m not too used to fussing around with the self-timer and such yet, so my apologies if the photos are not the best.

♥︎ My Relaxing Setup ♥︎

I wish that I could’ve written more blog posts this week, but I have been so very busy. Furthermore, the things I’ve been busy with are not interesting enough to blog about (writing my senior thesis, keeping up with club responsibilities, dance practice).

Today was really my first day this week I was able to relax, and I spent it lazily lounging around watching anime and drinking tea. I thought I would show some pictures of the little table I have set-up in my college dorm-room where I like to sit and relax.

Here we are~ The fluffy cutie in the front is named Madame Croquette. The thing behind the table is actually a (now non-functional) fireplace. My college was built in the 19th century, and so a lot of dorm-rooms still have fireplaces in them, though they’re all sealed up now.

The anime on my computer-screen is one I just started called Go! Princess Precure. It’s really cute and fun, I want to make a post about it when I finish it.
I really quite like this teapot that I bought recently at H-Mart. It was cheap, but it looks cute and comes with a little infuser as well~ The tea-mug has an illustration and poem by Cicely Mary Barker printed on it.

Some instant ramyun and cute My Melody chopsticks.

The little tea-cup is an ornament my friend gave me, and behind it is a gingham-print bento box, also a gift from a friend.

This is a tin that came filled with cookies but I kept the tin because I thought it was really cute! Now I am using it to store a pair of chopsticks and some tea-utensils.

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend! What do you like to do to relax?

Thrift-Store Adventures

I am dying to go on an adventure, but it has been far too cold. I really do despise the cold. I wish I were a mermaid, then I would fill a tub with hot water and fall asleep in it and probably stay there until spring.

My favorite kinds of adventures are the outdoors ones, but since that is not ideal right now I have settled for the indoors type. Reading a novel (in my opinion) is like an adventure of sorts, so today I sat in the milk tea cafe down the street and went on a little adventure with Diana Wynne Jones. I also took a peek in the nearby thrift-store. I absolutely love thrift-stores; you never know what you’ll find in them, and often the items have a lot of personality. I have my eye on this tea-set, but I couldn’t really justify buying it at the present moment. (My current dream in life is to become a self-sufficient individual with an eclectic collection of porcelain and vintage doilies in her living room. I don’t think this is too improbable as far as dreams go, but I haven’t made much progress yet.)

This certainly isn’t the most exciting diary entry, but personally these small joys and comforts are what keep me going through the rather dry, dreary month of January. (Can you tell I’m not a winter person?) I hope whoever reads this is having a lovely, warm day, and if you’re feeling down, I suggest going to your nearby thrift-store or antique shop and see what treasures you may find. Even if you don’t end up buying anything, it is a lot of fun to look at the merchandise and imagine what past lives the items may have had.

Baby Tea Stars Shine Bright

My dear friend and fellow lolita Nina gifted me this adorable tin of tea for Christmas. It seemed like something I must have created in a dream; not only is it named after my favorite brand, but it’s made using my favorite three flavors, rose, vanilla, and strawberry!

The tea is one of Adagio Teas’ fandom blends. Sadly I couldn’t find this particular blend on their website, but I still thought a review of it might make for a cute lifestyle-type post.

This tea smells wonderful. It does have quite a sweet odor due to the vanilla and strawberries, but the black tea leaves keep it from smelling too sickeningly sweet, and give it a slightly more refined odor. It seems perfect for Baby, which is undeniably one of the sweetest lolita brands, but in my opinion often achieves the perfect balance between super-girly sweetness and a more delicate, mature femininity in their pieces.

After adding hot water the strawberry scent really came out, and the water turned a cute, rosy amber color. This tea smells even more delicious when brewing, like a freshly-baked strawberry shortcake!

This tea is surprisingly light. The strawberries are definitely the main flavor here. I drank this without any milk or sugar, and I think it was sweet enough on its own, but then again I don’t care much for very sweet teas. I was a little disappointed that I could not taste the roses at all, and I do think the strawberries were a bit overpowering. The next time I brew this I will be careful to put less strawberries in my pot, if I can. I also think it would taste better over ice, but I’ll have to test that in a few months when the weather is a bit warmer here. Overall I enjoyed this tea, and I’ll definitely have to brew some the next time I’m craving strawberry cake!

♥︎ My 2018 Lolita Resolutions ♥︎

I am a smidgen late in posting my New Year’s Resolutions, I do hope you’ll forgive me. Anyway, it’s better late than never, right? I do always enjoy writing resolutions at the start of each year, and it’s nice to be able to post them somewhere public so my friends can hold me accountable. Truthfully, last year I think my resolutions were a tad bit…ambitious. Of course, ambition is good, to an extent. But in this case my goals were very big-picture, long-term goals, that I had trouble following because they were not easily quantifiable.

This year my resolutions are small, but ultimately meaningful things that I can very feasibly work towards each day.

Wear lolita at least once a week. My lolita wardrobe is still small, but it has finally grown to the point that I can absolutely feasibly do this now.

Spend at least one hour per day without electronics. By electronics I mean computers, cell phones, and video games. I’d like to spend less time using these things, and more time appreciating nature or enjoying the company of friends and loved ones.

Keep a tea journal. I drink tea everyday, and I love it so very much, but I think journalling about the tea I drink would make it even more fun for me. It means I will need to drink slowly, and allow myself to savor the flavors of the tea more. And it also means I will feel encouraged to try more teas than I normally would.

Read more books. This one is a bit more difficult to quantify; I don’t want to write something like “Finish one book every other week” since the length and density of a book may vary so much. But I would really like to read more; it is a hobby I have sadly abandoned since I started college.

Buy more lolita basics. I find myself very eager to buy lolita main pieces (dresses and skirts), and not so much the essential basics like blouses and shoes. In particular, I would like to buy more cotton blouses of varying collar styles, since right now all of my blouses have giant Peter Pan collars.

Dreaming of Peru

Happy New Year! Last night I finally safely returned home, after a train ride, several car rides, three flights and many delays. I was so exhausted that I fell asleep well before the clock struck midnight.  Now I am sat in bed with many warm, fluffy blankets, eating from a tin of chocolate cookies, and watching my silly kitten Marie chase her tail. How lovely it is to be back!

I feel now is a proper time to reflect on my trip to Peru. I think that giving a straightforward account of each day would be long, not to mention a bit boring. So I present to you a list of my personal favorite moments of the trip, in roughly chronological order.

  • Exploring several beautiful colonial churches, including one where everything was covered in gold!
  • Eating lunch and dessert in this terrace all covered in flowers.
  • This little cat who had found herself a fortress in the marketplace made of stools and tables and sacks of wheat.
  • Visiting a tiny, family-operated planetarium. They did not have modern indoor heating, so they offered blankets to all the visitors. I thought it was very cosy to be sitting in such a small room, wrapped in blankets, looking at the stars.  (And evidently my boyfriend agreed with me, for he fell asleep within a few minutes.)
  • Snacking on banana chips seasoned with salt from the nearby salt flats.
  • Holding this precious baby lamb.
  • Riding the train through the Andes towards Machu Picchu, whilst sipping caramelized almond tea and playing word games with my boyfriend and his brother.
  • This cute pink rose I found in Aguas Calientes.
  • Learning that the Incans believed the mountains were sacred, living entities, and feeling certain they must have been onto something.

(P.S. Click any image to enlarge it.)
