Dreaming of Peru

Happy New Year! Last night I finally safely returned home, after a train ride, several car rides, three flights and many delays. I was so exhausted that I fell asleep well before the clock struck midnight.  Now I am sat in bed with many warm, fluffy blankets, eating from a tin of chocolate cookies, and watching my silly kitten Marie chase her tail. How lovely it is to be back!

I feel now is a proper time to reflect on my trip to Peru. I think that giving a straightforward account of each day would be long, not to mention a bit boring. So I present to you a list of my personal favorite moments of the trip, in roughly chronological order.

  • Exploring several beautiful colonial churches, including one where everything was covered in gold!
  • Eating lunch and dessert in this terrace all covered in flowers.
  • This little cat who had found herself a fortress in the marketplace made of stools and tables and sacks of wheat.
  • Visiting a tiny, family-operated planetarium. They did not have modern indoor heating, so they offered blankets to all the visitors. I thought it was very cosy to be sitting in such a small room, wrapped in blankets, looking at the stars.  (And evidently my boyfriend agreed with me, for he fell asleep within a few minutes.)
  • Snacking on banana chips seasoned with salt from the nearby salt flats.
  • Holding this precious baby lamb.
  • Riding the train through the Andes towards Machu Picchu, whilst sipping caramelized almond tea and playing word games with my boyfriend and his brother.
  • This cute pink rose I found in Aguas Calientes.
  • Learning that the Incans believed the mountains were sacred, living entities, and feeling certain they must have been onto something.
